Although set-aside was not designed to deliver wildlife benefits, much wildlife thrived on it simply because it provided a different range of habitats and feeding opportunities and there was so much of it. Similarly, leaving specific areas uncultivated can provide benefits for the protection of soil and water. The same environmental benefits could be created on a much smaller area if the land is managed specifically to deliver these benefits. Hilary Benn’s challenge to the farming industry is to protect these environmental benefits in light of the removal of the requirement to manage any land as set-aside in 2008.
So, how can this be achieved? The Curry Group has come up with a five-point plan.
