Statutory Management Requirements (SMRs) are specific European legal requirements applicable to farmers. They comprise a number of articles from 19 EU Directives and Regulations which address the environment, public, plant and animal health, and animal welfare.
Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions (GAECs) are domestic legal requirements requiring you to keep your soils in good condition, and to maintain a range of habitat and landscape features which are important to the English countryside. They either reinforce existing law, or were already existing good practice.
